How to get a table at a fully booked restaurant

You found the perfect place for the date and every slot on Saturday says unavailable. Before you give up on it, know that reservation books change constantly. People cancel, restaurants hold back seats, and some of the room is never on the reservation system at all.

Ask about the bar and walk-ins

Many restaurants keep bar seats or part of the room for walk-ins. Arriving right at opening, or early in the evening on a weeknight, gives you the best chance. For a date, two seats at the bar can be better than a table anyway: side by side, close and relaxed.

Join the waitlist or notify list

Many restaurants and reservation platforms let you ask to be told when a slot opens for your date and party size. Turn those alerts on for a few times around the one you want, and respond quickly when one arrives.

Check for cancellations at the right moments

• The day before, when people finalize plans and cancel what they will not use.
• The day of, especially mid-afternoon, when plans change.
• Around any cancellation deadline, if the restaurant charges a fee for late cancellations.

Be flexible on time and size

A table for two at 5:30 or 9:15 is often open when 7:30 is not. If the evening allows it, move the anchor earlier or later and shift the other stops around it.

Let something watch for you
